Don't hate me for these graphics (they hurt my eyes, too) but I found them on a website from another school district and didn't see the sense in recreating the wheel. These are solid test taking strategies for all grade levels. I would not recommend using this as a slide show but you could pick a tip to discuss each day leading up to testing. You could even turn any of these these into mini-lessons with simple practice activities.
Aside from strategy, the most important things for your kids to know are:
- Tests are made to show what you know. It's OK if you don't know everything.
- It's important to do YOUR best. Growth is just as important as mastery.
- "You are more than a score."
Consider creating individual challenges for your kids to beat their scores from their last test and/or reaching proficiency for those who should and are capable of doing so. You can even show students their current data and find something to be proud of them for, whether it's being proficient or close to the next level. If they are very low, you can remind them of how much they've learned this year and what you see them doing very well in class. All kiddos will benefit from a little sincere pep-talking/confidence boosting.
