"Three Reads" is another Math Language Routine (MLR) designed to support in-the-moment teacher, peer, and self assessment in order to develop student language to better organize thoughts and communicate ideas. MLR were created for math but variations can absolutely be used across all subject areas. "Three Reads" is exactly as it sounds- students read their given material (a math problem, a graph, a diagram, a situation, etc) THREE TIMES! The idea is that students should start thinking about what the problem is asking before they start to solve.
Each read has a specific purpose:
Read #1 What is the situation/diagram/problem about?
Read #2 What quantities are important? What information is important?
Read #3 What strategies can be used to solve this problem?
SEE IT IN ACTION: Three Reads (8:51 min)
